Joel Salazar, professionally known as DJ Leo J, is a Dallas based DJ, Curator, and Educator with more than 20 years of experience curating music centered experiences for events, organizations, and communities.
Leo J’s work spans corporate events, private celebrations, nightlife, public activations, and cultural programming throughout Dallas–Fort Worth and North Texas.
His approach combines thoughtful preparation, musical versatility, and the ability to read the room in real time. Rather than relying on a standard playlist, he considers the audience, setting, and purpose of each event to create an experience that feels intentional and appropriate for the moment.

Leo J’s work extends beyond the DJ booth. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with artists including DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Z-Trip, and Mix Master Mike, while building a reputation as a performer, cultural curator, educator, and community organizer.
He is the founder of Fresh 45s, a DJ-driven platform that highlights local and national talent while celebrating the culture of vinyl and the 45 RPM format. He also founded Battle Grounds, a platform dedicated to developing and sustaining dance culture through events, education, and community programming.
Together, these projects reflect his commitment to creating spaces where artists can connect, audiences can participate, and culture can grow.
Beyond nightlife, Leo J works with municipalities, cultural organizations, schools, and community partners to make music, dance, and hip-hop culture accessible, educational, and engaging. He has partnered with the City of Dallas on public cultural programming and has taught workshops at cultural centers, community spaces, and college campuses across North Texas. He also serves as a Teaching Fellow in Music Business and Entrepreneurship at the University of North Texas, where he helps students connect their musical development with professional direction, entrepreneurial thinking, and sustainable career planning.
His additional creative work includes contributing to projects such as Kids Dig and co-producing We From Dallas, a documentary exploring the history of Dallas hip-hop that premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival.
Leo J’s work has also led to collaborations with organizations and brands including the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, Meow Wolf, Toni & Guy, Remezcla, and other leading cultural and community partners.
